The CREATIVE PEDAGOGY has been in ongoing development since 1983.
It was developed by Áine Burke of CREATE
-an Irish artist, media producer/ director and facilitator in creative
development, who has been directing workshops and creating learning
materials in this field since 1982.
At the core of a pedagogy for facilitating creativity is a CREATIVE
PEDAGOGY which involves three stages:
- explore
- articulate
- express.
The first stage - and the one essential to begin a creative journey
- is EXPLORE. In EXPLORE, we use the skills of perception, sensing,
awareness, dreams, observation and imagination to journey with an
idea or story in any form. EXPLORE gives us time to play and voyage
into new terrains. We can travel in all directions and experience
new perspectives and all sorts of emotions. In EXPLORE we are gods
and goddesses; creating new worlds through our imagination and dreams.
This is a time where everything is a possibility - the only thing
that constrains us is the time we allow for this activity.
The second stage in the CREATIVE PEDAGOGY is ARTICULATE. This involves
the skills of defining what we have explored, pinpointing the idea/s
we want to develop and developing the ways we want to express them.
The idea/s are expanded on by researching and collating further information
and content (eg, photos, recordings etc). Once we know what content
we want to work with, we can decide on the format of expression: whether
it will be a song, essay, music, painting, drama, new garden etc.
Then we research and develop know-how or craft in that format, learning
to work with the tools it is associated with.
The third stage is EXPRESS. This is where we utilize all the skills
we have previously learnt in order to completely tell a story or orchestrate
an idea. Content and format information are combined. This stage involves
form crafts and skills, production and management skills - how to
manage time, existing abilities and resources to fulfil our vision
and express it as full as possible to an audience. Production phases
here include pre-production, production and post-production. Reflection
on what we have expressed develops an awareness for the possibilities
for new ideas and improvement on methodologies and work practises
for the next project. Once you have applied the process to one project
you can improve in it over and over until you adapt your own creative
process which suits your character and creative expression.
Creative Learning Software based on this approach and aimed at children
and adults is in development.
