This is the second program in the creative learning initiative, which is based on the principle that a creative approach to all learning is vital for a child's development.

The impulse for any creative expression is stimulation, inspiration and motivation. When the children stimulate their own minds with sensory input discovered during this program (drawn from the world's symphony of rhythms and sound) their memory will become a bank of inspirational content. This memory bank will grow as they do, and will trigger their imagination and dreams in developing original ideas for musical composition and other creative expressions.

This program is divided into three Modules.

  • Module 1 is dedicated to the individual child's discovery of sound and music, thereby building their confidence in musical expression and the CREATIVE PEDAGOGY.
  • In Module 2, the children do the same exercises as they did in Module 1 but this time in small groups. This reinforces their musical expression, creative learning and articulation skills. They also learn to listen to each other so that their final composition is an expression of the entire group.
  • In Module 3 the class works together as a group, ultimately working with the other schools in the project to perform one musical composition.

Modules 1 and 2 aim to facilitate creative learning, music and group skills over the first 6 weeks of the program. Teachers and children will learn the technical skills of recording sounds using a mini-disk, and editing compositions on a Media workstation using audio editing software called Sound Forge. Through these Modules, the children can also add recorded sounds and edited compositions to the project site archive.

Module 3 will focus on developing a collaborative composition with all the schools in the project over the latter 6 weeks of the project. This composition will be based on an adaptation of an Irish story "The Children of Lir", and is planned to be broadcast on radio, TV, and the web.

The teachers' role in the program is:

  • to direct the music program in class according to the spirit in which it was designed
  • to help the children maximise their concentration and involvement in individual exercises
  • to reinforce the creative learning process in each exercise
  • to attend web casts three times during the duration of the program with the class in order to collaborate with other schools on group compositions

The CREATIVE PEDAGOGY describes the background and outline structure for foundational creative learning with children.
